ARTcnet Fine Art Gallery Presents Brian Petro Photography
My third major body of work emphasizes photographic thermal transfers. These are created by using instinctive, primal combinations of atypically matched elements and images that I have gleaned from a vast archive that was compiled over several years through photographic documentation, detritus collection, and extensive source image research.

The Thermal Transfer body of work features images and objects that I have obtained through travel in cities and locations around the world: Rio De Janeiro; London; Prague; Florence; Rome; Paris; Nice; Venice; Parati; Buzios; Finale Ligure; Pisa; Interlaken; and from several U.S. cities: Philadelphia; Washington D.C.; New York City; Los Angeles; and San Francisco.

I photograph the images and gather found objects.  Specific images are researched and collected and transferred onto a polymer coated paper using a xerographic (non-digital) imaging process. Using a heat press, the images from the polymer paper are released onto Arches paper. Depending on over/underplacement, intensity of heat, timing of heat application, and pressure of heat application, the images can be manipulated as to color intensity, image completeness, surface texture modification, and melding of images.

I emphasize elements of composition, color, and shape relation, all executed with instinctual urgency regarding image creation.  Interpretation of my work should be based upon the perceptions and associations made by you, the viewer. I try to aid you in self-discovery. This body of work melds imagery of Greek and Roman sculpture, architectural structure, design and style, the natural environment, industry, and manufactured elements  with the concept of the confines or limitless description through numerals.

The energy which fuels my work is  derived from the development of urban survival skills and attitude, the forces which drive people through the sometimes brutal anonymity of urban life.  My artwork is a direct reflection of my modified perceptions of life from the duality of my very supportive youth and the brutal independence within the urban realm.

I accept commissions.
